20 million AVG users to lose updates

It is believed that around 20 million users of AVG's free anti-virus software will lose their protection on February 18 because they have not downloaded the next version.

Grisoft, the company behind the software warned users of its free anti-virus package last year that the software was being upgraded; users need to download the new edition, version 7.5.

Anyone still on version 7.1 of the free software will find that it stops working on February 18, the cut-off date set by Grisoft.

The company said that of the 45 million people across the world who use its free edition, roughly half are still using the old version, and will not be protected from new viruses after the cut-off date.

This could have major side-effects, such as allowing virus writers to target unprotected AVG users and take over their PCs to be used for sending further viruses or carry out other criminal activity. Unlike normal upgrades, which are downloaded and installed automatically by the program, the new edition requires a complete reinstallation.

A representative of Grisoft said that because the new version includes large files, it is easier for users to download it from the website. Users have the option of upgrading to the free version 7.5 or the paid-for edition which includes technical support and some additional features, such as a firewall.

If you haven't upgraded yet and are still on version 7.1 or other, download the latest verison now before it's too late.

I have been using AVG free forever.......Question: does it not update every day and does it not become the current version by these updates? :)

Uppdates for the verison you have now are still available, it doesn't work like windows updates where you can get the new versions.

Grisoft have made the latest edition so that they cn close the update server for older versions, by downloading the new version, updates are automatically done each day just for the that version not for others hence why they are asking users to upgrade now to the 7.5 version.

Mine updates on it's own. I remember the first time it did it, I almost freaked out as it tell you your virus data base is being updated...lol
The avast I use is free for one year and then you simply reregister.

Avast

When you start AVG, go to the Control Center or Click Test Center, there should be a menu tab saying...

Information

click on that and select 'About AVG'

OR

Hold down Shift / Alt / and press F10

If you have the latest version which is 7.5.4 or above you're ok, if not get it now from the Free Program section
